Real-Time Simulation of Surface Gravity Ocean Waves Based on the TMA Spectrum

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper, we present a real-time method to display ocean surface gravity waves for various computer graphics applications. Starting from a precise surface gravity model in oceanography, we derive its implementation model and our prototype implementation shows more than 50 frames per second on Intel Core2 Duo 2.40GHz PC's. Our major contributions will be the improvement on the expression power of ocean waves and providing more user-controllable parameters for various wave shapes.

“…Pre-rendering methods [12,13] involve the prior calculation and storage of water surface wave information, commonly employed in applications requiring high realism. Statistical model methods [14,15], based on FFT, find widespread use in the film and video game industries [16] due to their exceptional realism and global controllability.…”

“…Reference [1] given its own modeling method to real-time rendering of a wide range of ocean surface and certain effect has been achieved. Combining the actual observation data and the geometric wave theory together, the modeling method based on spectrum means that the actual waves are represented by a sum of the different amplitude and phase sine spectrums, using spectral analysis method to determine the characteristics of the composition of the wave spectrum [2]. The modeling method based on hydrodynamics theory can simulate the moving of the internal particles of the ocean by solving the dynamics equation, rather than simulate of the movement of wave on ocean surface directly.…”

“…Lee et al [LBR07] combine a superposition of sinusoids and the TMA spectrum (Texel, Marson and Arsole, based on Jonswap's) [BGRV85], creating a better statistical distribution of waves. It also offers better control for the end-user who can change parameters such as the bottom depth, thus enabling him to generate different types of water volumes (lakes, rivers, etc).…”
