Realising the ecosystem-service value of native woodland in Ireland

Abstract: Background: In common with many other countries, native forest in the Ireland is under pressure from a variety of sources. Although the area of forest has increased to 10.5% of the land area of Ireland, this is comprised mainly of exotic conifer species (6.8%). Native species woodland represents only 100,000 hectares (1.4%) of the land area. In addition, much of this area is fragmented and comprised of a narrow range of species. Just 20,000 hectares is represented by woodland resembling the ancient woodland th… Show more

“…Ireland is one of the least forested countries in Europe with less than 10.5 % of forest (≈ 697,600 ha) [1]. The vast and growing amount of agricultural and food waste has become a major concern throughout the world; within the EU, approximately 700 million tons of agricultural wastes are generated annually [2].…”

“…It is important to note that appropriate forest management is essential as there are several negative environmental effects from poorly managed riparian and hillslope forests. These include eutrophication, sedimentation and acidification (see Bullock et al, 2014 for a review of these and other potential negative impacts). We note that a common thread through the literature is the recommendation for a bespoke approach for new afforestation projects.…”

“…35 All over Ireland, for instance, the increased volume of imported tree species caused the inflation of the grey squirrel population, which changed the nature of the ecosystem and resulted in the depletion of native red squirrels, which are now endangered. 36 Fourthly, close planting and invasive alien species brought into the UK (such as plants, mammals, and insects) 37 have increased the amount of disease which, in turn, threatens the health of all woodland, including AW. As part of the UK Forest Standards, landowners and communities must take responsibility for managing diseases through prioritizing, identifying, reporting, and removing diseased trees.…”
