Reappraising cognitive control: normal reactive adjustments following conflict processing are abolished by proactive emotion regulation

Abstract: The congruency sequence effect (CSE) reflected by the influence of the congruency of the previous trial on the current one translates improved cognitive control (CC). Yet, it remains debated whether reactive or proactive control processes mostly contribute to this effect. To address this question, we administered a Stroop task controlling for effects of feature repetition and contingency learning to a large group of participants, where we manipulated the frequency of incongruent trials in a block-wise fashion … Show more

“…Afterward, the problem words were erased and participants had to report, via button press, whether they had solved the problem via insight or analysis. Self-reports for insight and analytic solving have been established in numerous behavioral and neuroimaging studies (e.g., Cristofori et al, 2018 ; Jung-Beeman et al, 2004 ; Kounios et al, 2006 ; Laukkonen and Tangen, 2018 ; Salvi et al, 2018 ; Salvi et al, 2016a ,b; Santarnecchi et al, 2019 ; Salvi et al, 2020 ; Salvi and Bowden, 2019 ). No feedback was given to participants regarding whether the solution they had provided was correct.…”

“…Consequently, most existing AAT research has focused on stable approach-avoidance tendencies. Research on dynamic tendencies, on the other hand, for example towards food, has so far yielded inconsistent findings (for a summary, see Meule et al, 2019 ). It is, however, plausible that such dynamic approach-avoidance tendencies exist.…”
