BackgroundSuicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors are among the leading causes of death and injury in adolescents and youth worldwide. Mobile app development could help people at risk and provide resources to deliver evidence-based interventions. There is no specific application for adolescents and young people available in Spanish. Our group developed CALMA, the first interactive mobile application with the user in Spanish, which provides tools based on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to manage a crisis of suicidal or non-suicidal self-directed violence with the aim of preventing suicide in adolescents and youth.MethodsTo test the effectiveness, safety and level of engagement of the CALMA app in people aged 10 to 19 who are treated in mental health services of two public hospitals, we will conduct a parallel-group, two-arm randomized controlled trial. Participants will be assessed face-to-face and via video call at four timepoints: day-0 (baseline), day-30, day-60, and day-90. A total of 29 participants per group will be included. Change in the frequency of suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors will be compared between groups, as well as the level of emotional dysregulation, level of app engagement and time of psychiatric admission during the follow-up period.DiscussionThis study is particularly relevant to young people given their widespread use of mobile technology, while there are currently no available smartphone app-based self-guided psychological strategies in Spanish that attempt to reduce suicidal behavior in adolescents who are assisted in the public health sector from low and middle-income countries in Latin America.Clinical trial registrationhttps://clinicaltrials.gov/, NCT05453370.

Background:Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuro-developmental disorder with a relatively high prevalence. Due to the significant difference in incidence between males and females, gender has been used as an important factor in the study of ADHD. This study aimd to explore the gender difference in the cognitive function of children with ADHD using the Das-Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (DN: CAS). Methods: This study recruited 210 ADHD children as the test group and 118 healthy children as the control group. The gender ratio in each group was 1:1 with same age and grades. The DN: CAS was assessed in both groups. Results: A comparison of sex differences within the ADHD group revealed that boys'performance in Planning was better than that of girls (p=0.018),while the ADHD boys received lower scores in Verbal-Spatial Relations,Sentence Repetition, and Attention than that of girls (P=0.015,0.033,0.031). Only boys in the ≥9 year of age ADHD group received higher scores in Planning than that of girls in the same age range (p=0.031), gender differences were not found in the <9 year of age ADHD group and the control group. While only Boys in the <9 years of age ADHD group perform worser in Simultaneous Processing than that of girls in the same age range(p=0.045), gender differences were not found in the ≥9 year of age ADHD group and the control group. Conclusion: Gender differences exist in cognitive function of children with ADHD.The DN: CAS can provide significant evidence of the weakness of ADHD girls in Planning tasks with acceptable sensitivity. This gender difference is related to age. The DN: CAS can identify gender differences in cognitive function among children with ADHD at various ages and assist clinicians in identifying girls with ADHD who have less pronounced externalizing symptoms.

IntroductionDepressive and mixed symptoms in bipolar disorder (BD) have been linked to higher suicide risk. Based on Klonsky and May's three‐step theory and Joiner's Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide, we hypothesized that patients diagnosed with BD who reported severe levels of depressive symptoms and mixed depressive and manic symptoms would also report higher levels of suicidal desire and acquired capability of suicide, as well as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.MethodsThe sample included 177 outpatients diagnosed with BD. Latent class analysis was conducted to replicate the identified groups of a previously conducted study using a smaller but overlapping dataset. Between‐class and pairwise analyses with measures of suicidal desire and acquired capability were conducted.ResultsAs expected, the classes characterized by severe depressive symptoms and mixed symptoms reported higher levels of suicidal desire. However, the results regarding acquired capability were less consistent.ConclusionGiven the overall elevated suicide risk of BD and the consistent relationship between depressive symptoms and other strong correlates of suicide, clinicians who work with patients diagnosed with BD should closely monitor changes in their depressive symptoms.
