Reassessing the scope of OR practice: The Influences of Problem Structuring Methods and the Analytics Movement

Abstract: This paper argues that if OR is to prosper it needs to more closely reflect the needs of organizations and its practitioners. Past research has highlighted a gap between theoretical research developments, applications and the methods most frequently used in organizations. The scope of OR applications has also been contested with arguments as to the expanding boundaries of OR. But despite this, anecdotal evidence suggests that OR has become marginalized in many contexts. In order to understand these changes, IFO… Show more

“…(p. 593). Ranyard et al (2015) argue that the operational research (OR) community needs to extend its efforts for practitioners, particularly as regards problem structuring methods (PSMs) or Soft OR and the business analytics movement, to capitalize on the big data and analytics revolution and to be at the forefront of assisting practice with better theory concerning how to obtain value. Waller and Fawcett (2013) say that data science, predictive analytics and big datawhich they collectively refer to as DPB -is increasing in importance for academics as well as practitioners.…”

“…Despite this recognition, most empirical studies of OR practice have mainly assessed the adoption rates of particular OR approaches by practitioners and organisations (e.g. Mingers & Taylor, 1992;O'Brien, 2011;Ranyard, Fildes, & Hu, 2015;Stenfors, Tanner, Syrjänen, Seppälä, & Haapalinna, 2007). These studies are mostly about OR practice rather than of OR practice and thus, arguably, the discipline appears to be surprisingly uninterested in empirically examining OR practice itself.…”

“…Overall, the adoption of a methods analytic focus prompts us to investigate the wider range of OR methods actually used in practice (e.g. Ahmed & Robinson, 2013;O'Brien, 2011;Ranyard, Fildes, & Hu, 2015), how method use changes over time (e.g. Fortuin & Zijlstra, 2000) and, crucially for BOR, what the behavioural consequences of different use patterns are (e.g.…”
