“…In the post treatment phase the mean VAS pain score dropped to 2.45 at 1 week and then to 1.225 at 4 month period, whereas mean mouth opening improved to 33.475 mm at 1 week and to mean value of 41.05 mm at 4 month time period, which indicates significant improvement in patient symptoms and complaints. The results of the our study compare favourably with the findings of other authors describing the successful use of arthrocentesis and hydraulic distension in patients with a clinical diagnosis of closed-lock or disc displacement without reduction [21][22][23][24]. The results of this study are in conformity with the findings of the initial clinical trial that TMJ arthrocentesis and lavage with manipulation is an effective technique for the treatment of acute persistent closed lock of the TMJ in terms of significantly improving maximum mouth opening and jaw function, and reducing pain.…”

“…In 1986, Sanders described, in a case study, a successful treatment of synovitis using TMJ arthrocentesis 13 . Arthrocentesis began to develop and entered into common practice especially due to the efforts of Murakami et al in 1987 and Nitzan et al in 1990 -as a treatment option with a very satisfactory prognosis 14,15 . Arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed under local anaesthesia with or without Mann-Whitney U test sedation.…”

“…Murakami et al first described a technique of TMJ arthrocentesis with pumping irrigation and hydraulic pressure to the upper joint cavity followed by manipulation of the jaw. 9 Nitzan et al then described a technique whereby two needles instead of one were introduced into the upper joint space and this technique of arthrocentesis was used in the present study. 10 Various pharmacological agents (Intra-articular injections) used for alleviating TMJ pain and dysfunction after arthrocentesis.…”
