Recent Advances in Aptasensor for Cytokine Detection: A Review

Abstract: Cytokines are proteins secreted by immune cells. They promote cell signal transduction and are involved in cell replication, death, and recovery. Cytokines are immune modulators, but their excessive secretion causes uncontrolled inflammation that attacks normal cells. Considering the properties of cytokines, monitoring the secretion of cytokines in vivo is of great value for medical and biological research. In this review, we offer a report on recent studies for cytokine detection, especially studies on aptase… Show more

“…A fluorescence-based biosensor is based on the basic principle of visualizing the fluorescence signal that appears in a fluorescent dye, and the presence of an analyte is confirmed by a change in the intensity of the fluorescence signal [ 119 ]. Fluorescence-based biosensors have many advantages, such as good selectivity, high sensitivity, multiplex analysis, simple instrumentation, fast analysis time, and simple operation.…”

“…The cell-released proteins, such as cytokines and proteases, play critical roles in regulating physiology and homeostasis in the change process of the extracellular environment. Optical spectroscopies based on fluorescence, SERS, and SPR have been exploited in the protein secretion analysis (Table ). A fluorescent immunoassay-based single cell analysis platform has been developed for investigating the differential modulation effect in cytokine secretions by the tumor microenvironment (Figure A) .…”

“…Furthermore, unlike antibodies, aptamers can be probed against nonimmunogenic and toxic targets that may be of significance in different infectious disease pathogenesis (Hong et al, 2012). Due to these distinct and favorable advantages of aptamers, recently, the aptamer-based sensors have gained traction in the field of biosensing, especially in cytokine detection (Kim et al, 2021). These aptasensors have also been designed for clinical diagnostics, where they have been utilized in the detection of cancer biomarkers, cancer cells as well as infectious microorganisms (bacteria, virus and prion) (Hong et al, 2012).…”
