Recent advances in CE and CEC of pollutants

Abstract: Recent advances in CE and CEC separation, detection and sample preparation/preconcentration methodologies, for the determination of a variety of compounds having current or potential environmental relevance, have been overviewed. The reviewed literature has illustrated the wide range of CE applications available, indicating a continuing interest in CE and CEC in the environmental field. New developments in chip-based CE systems are also discussed.

“…Capillary electrophoresis (CE) can be applied to the analysis of charged species or compounds that are in equilibrium with a charged form, and are thus generally suited to carboxylic acids as summarized in a recent review (Dabek-Zlotorzynska et al, 2008). CE can also be coupled to MS and has been used to investigate the organic acids and acidic oligomers in SOA formed in simulation chamber studies (Iinuma et al, 2004(Iinuma et al, , 2005Müller et al, 2007).…”

“…In addition, many separation and detection systems incorporating microchips have the potential to effectively identify and quantify environmental pollutants (Veuthey 2005;Dabek-Zlotorzynska et al 2008;Yang et al 2001;Li and Lin 2009;Xiao et al 2007;Holland and Leigh 2002;Stege et al 2009). Of the methods available, microchip capillary electrophoresis-electrochemical detection (CE-ECD) has the advantages of low cost, short analysis time, minimal wastewater output, high separation efficiency and high sensitivity, in addition to the potential for miniaturization (Song and Chen 2001;Chen et al 2006Wang 2005).…”

“…There are a number of reviews in the literature that cover the use of CE and CE-MS for specific applications including proteomics [22][23][24], metabolomics [25], forensic [26], environmental [27] and clinical sciences [28]. In the majority of these examples, the purpose of CE was to serve as a separation tool and resolve the components in a sample mixture.…”
