Recent advances in enhancing the sensitivity of electrophoresis and electrochromatography in capillaries and microchips (2010–2012)

Abstract: CE has been alive for over two decades now, yet its sensitivity is still regarded as being inferior to that of more traditional methods of separation such as HPLC. As such, it is unsurprising that overcoming this issue still generates much scientific interest. This review continues to update this series of reviews, first published in Electrophoresis in 2007, with updates published in 2009 and 2011 and covers material published through to June 2012. It includes developments in the field of stacking, covering al… Show more

“…This can be overcome by the application of stacking techniques such as online preconcentration step which have been summarized in recent general reviews on the topic [14][15][16][17]. For example, sweeping was employed to achieve the appropriate sensitivity when monitoring the activity of nucleotide pyrophosphatases/phosphodiesterases [18] as well as for a MEKC assay of sirtuin enzymes [19].…”

“…When the sample was introduced with pressure, it is called field amplified sample stacking (FASS). When the sample was introduced electrokinetically, it is called field amplified sample injection (FASI) [32]. MSS relies on the transport of the micelle bound charged analyte and the reversal of the analytes' effective electrophoretic mobility at the MSS boundary between the micellar zone and the adjacent zone [7].…”

“…This boundary can be created by changes in conductivity (as in field-amplified sample stacking and isotachophoresis), or changes in pH (as in dynamic pH junction), or inclusion of a pseudostationary phase (as in sweeping and micelle collapse) [22][23][24][25]. A series of biannual reviews, first published in Electrophoresis in 2007 [26] and continued in 2009 [27], 2011 [28], 2013 [29], and 2015 [30] To the best of our knowledge, some reviews and book chapters on IL-based surfactants cover the use of ILs in CE [32,33], but in the present work, for the first time, we described the applications resulted from implementing ILs in enhancing the sensitivity of CE. Figure 2 shows a chart summarizing the different modes based on ILs in enhancing the sensitivity of CE.…”
