“…Survey conducted in 2015 suggested that approximately 21.4 ml diesel is burn in trans-Himalayan condition to transport one kilogram of fresh vegetable by truck from the nearest tomato growing town, which is 450 km away. Future research is needed on the effect of low-cost biodegradable mulching material on crop growth and yield 18 . …”

“…On the other hand, no effect of grass removal on survival of two Eucalyptus species was noted in a year with above‐average rainfall (George & Brennan ). At our site, which is drier than the aforementioned sites, unusually high rainfall after planting negatively affected survival in the grass removal treatment likely due to soil erosion (see Evans ) and in the mulching treatment due to decreased rain infiltration, while the grass present in control plots served as organic mulching and intercepted more rainfall (Kader et al ). Therefore, even when weed control is recommended in plantings in dry sites to decrease competition for moisture, in semiarid or highly seasonal sites, the occurrence of “dry spells” or heavy rains may counteract benefits (Evans ).…”

“…Various natural (i.e., hydromulch and agricultural straw) and synthetic mulching materials are available (Kader, Senge, Mojid, & Ito, ; Parsakhoo, Jajouzadeh, & Rezaee Motlagh, ; Prats, Malvar, Vieira, MacDonald, & Keizer, ; Prosdocimi, Tarolli, & Cerdà, ; Sadeghi, Hazbavi, & Younesi, ). Most of them are installed on degraded forest lands where concern for intact aquatic ecosystems is crucial (Robichaud, Beyers, & Neary, ).…”
