Recent advances in multimedia networking

Abstract: In recent years, the ubiquity of multimedia services along with the proliferation of mobile devices and the demand for new audio and video applications are changing the life style of users. User demands for multimedia access anywhere, anytime from any device are creating new challenges for research communities from both academia and industry. It is expected that video-based services alone will account for 50 percent of all consumer network traffic in 2012 and we will continue to witness the explosive growth in… Show more

“…delivery of real-time video applications over heterogeneous wireless networks with Quality of Experience (QoE) [1,2] support. Video streaming will provide new sources of income for network operators and content providers, since it will be a major application in future wireless systems and a key factor in ensuring their success [3,4].…”

“…Nowadays, it is possible to see fairly complex multi-function terminals capable of handling different media types. Mobile users are using such devices for different purposes, including the storage of personal information (e.g., an address book), to conduct various forms of interactions (e.g., voice, email, video phone), entertainment (e.g., gaming, on-demand video streaming), and information access (through web browsers) Cerqueira et al (2008).…”

“…Another important design consideration for future mobile multimedia devices is their conformance to well-known standards Cerqueira et al (2008) (open application framework, standard interfaces, etc.) relieving end-users of the need to spend time learning proprietary technologies.…”

“…Since discovering that QoS is not a useful metric of network quality, most proposals suggest that quality should be measured on the user level. This process was named Quality of Experience (QoE) [1,2]. Such measurement calls for unique structures (frameworks) of integrated assessment of the quality of video sequences [3].…”
