Recent Advances in Mycotoxin Determination in Fish Feed Ingredients

Abstract: Low-cost plant-based sources used in aquaculture diets are prone to the occurrence of animal feed contaminants, which may in certain conditions affect the quality and safety of aquafeeds. Mycotoxins, a toxic group of small organic molecules produced by fungi, comprise a frequently occurring plant-based feed contaminant in aquafeeds. Mycotoxin contamination can potentially cause significant mortality, reduced productivity, and higher disease susceptibility; thus, its timely detection is crucial to the aquacultu… Show more

“…Aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) is a biological toxin generated by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus when environmental conditions are appropriate [37]. These toxic substances can impact animal health and production, as well as cause harm to human beings if they are ingested [28,36,37]. The present study employed acute AFB 1 toxication (200 ppb) for Nile tilapia with or without medications.…”

“…Various analytical techniques, including a variety of chromatographic techniques [14][15][16], enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays [17][18][19], and spectrophotometric techniques [20,21], are frequently used for sensitive determination of toxins and abused drugs. However, the requirements of tedious sample pretreatment, skilled operators, and expensive and precise instruments greatly limit their application scope and in situ applications.…”
