Recent advances in power electronics technology for industrial and traction machine drives

Abstract: This paper presents a review of the state of the art of power electronics technology in both industrial and traction drive application. Key development trends include the dominance of ac adjustable-speed drives in new applications, with the squirrel-cage induction machine as the preferred machine in most cases. Particularly striking has been the rapid ascendance of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) as the predominant power switch in both industrial and traction applications ranging from fractional k… Show more

“…The system operates with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) where the gear ratio is determined by the power transfer between the generator and motor (Jahns and Blasko 2001). The batteries on the standard Prius are charged using the on-board PE.…”

“…The main reason for such number of phases is the three-phase power system, because previously to the modern power electronics converters [2] the AC machines, specially induction ones, were primarily used directly connected to the three-phase power supply. However, modern variable speed AC drives [6] are fed by power converters, therefore any number of phases may be used [7]. From the converter point of view, a multiphase drive is a natural way to increase the total power of the drive system without increasing the rated conditions of each converter power switch.…”

“…UE to high efficiency, high power density, high power factor, and high torque density, together with the development of permanent-magnet (PM) material and power electronics, PM brushless machines are increasingly being used in various applications, such as variable-speed drives, servo drives, electric vehicles, and other industrial drives [1], [2]. Compared with surface-mounted PM (SPM) machines, interior permanentmagnet (IPM) synchronous machines have robust rotor construction, high reluctance torque, and high irreversible demagnetization withstand, and are eminently suitable for electric vehicles which require a wide constant power operating speed range.…”
