Recent advances in surface‐enhanced Raman scattering‐based sensors for the detection of inorganic ions: Sensing mechanism and beyond

Abstract: Inorganic ions determination has been receiving increased attention due to its strong environmental and biomedical impact. Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has been considered to be a promising alternative method for inorganic ions analysis. Initially, the detection of inorganic ions is indirectly achieved by monitoring the SERS spectral alteration of a molecular probe (Raman reporter) upon its interaction with a specific inorganic ion. Recent years, based on incorporation of a functional … Show more

“…The widespread use of inorganic nanomaterials, namely, metal (Ag NPs and Au NPs) and metal oxide NPs (SiO 2 NPs and TiO 2 NPs) in a broad range of commercial products [ 1 ], such as paints [ 2 ], cosmetics [ 3 ], medicine [ 4 , 5 ], sensors [ 6 , 7 ], food additives [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], and sunscreens [ 11 , 12 ], highlighted the problem of their behavior and fate in several environmental compartments [ 13 ]. The unique physico-chemical properties, due to the high surface-to-volume ratio, make NPs very reactive materials with respect to the bulk counterpart [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Despite the fact that indirect SERS has been widely used for detecting macro biomolecules and cells [ [81] , [82] , [83] ], the detection of metabolites, however, is commonly applied in a direct way. This can be attributed to two reasons.…”

“…In addition, the review briefly introduces current challenges and future research opportunities for SERS in inorganic ion sensing. [21] Haynes et al provide a systematic investigation of how the three major metal film over nanosphere (FON) substrate fabrication parameters-nanosphere size, deposited metal thickness, and metal choice-impact the resulting LSPR. They employ optimized FONs for the sensing of an important allergen, soybean agglutinin with a limit of detection of 10 μg/ml.…”
