Nanomaterial-based generators are a highly promising power supply for micro/nanoscale devices, capable of directly harvesting energy from ambient sources without the need for batteries. These generators have been designed within four main types: piezoelectric, triboelectric, thermoelectric, and electret effects, and consist of ZnO-based, silicon-based, ferroelectric-material-based, polymer-based, and graphene-based examples. The representative achievements, current challenges, and future prospects of these nanogenerators are discussed.

Synthesis and characterization of sulfonated poly(ether imide) with higher thermal stability and effect on CO2, N2, and O2 permeabilities

An experimental design in different reaction conditions was applied to modify poly(ether imide), PEI, by sulfonation using acetyl sulfate. Higher temperatures and reaction times led to higher ion exchange capacity. The thermal analysis showed that our sulfonation approach accomplished preparing sulfonated PEI maintaining the thermal stability of its parent material even for the film with highest degree of sulfonation, and assessed the effect of this change on CO 2 , O 2 and N 2 permeabilities. The permeability results pointed out that our sulfonation approach is an effective way to produce high performance engineered polymers for fuel cell electrolyte membranes and for CO 2 separation from air. These results also suggest that the use of milder reactive medium at higher temperatures and for longer reaction times seems to be a more promising approach to achieve thermal stability than use more aggressive sulfonation agents.

This study reports on the effects of nucleating agents on morphology, charging, and electrostatic filtration performance of polypropylene meltblown webs. Two commercial nucleating agents, DMDBS (3:2, 4‐bis(3,4‐dimethyldibenzylidene) sorbitol) and NA11 (sodium 2,2′‐methylene‐bis(4,6‐di‐tertbutylphenyl)‐phosphate) were compared. It is hypothesized that faster solidification brought about by the addition of the nucleating agents may be responsible for the slight increase in fiber diameter and concomitant reduction in web solidity. Samples were charged at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures. Upon thermal charging, significant enhancement in the electrostatic potential and filtration performance of the webs was observed. Particularly, the stability of electrostatic filtration performance was found to be promising with the addition of these polarizable additives. Dielectric spectroscopy tests confirmed an increase in capacitance for samples containing nucleating agents. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 54:1533–1539, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers
