Recent Changes in the Geochemistry of the Reclaimed Porcupine Creek Alluvial Valley Floor, North Antelope/Rochelle Mine Campbell County, Wyoming

Abstract: Abstract. Two sections of the Porcupine Creek alluvial valley floor have been reconstructed at Powder River Coal Company's North Antelope Rochelle Mine using specialized reclamation methods. The lower section of Porcupine Creek (AVF Reach 1) was re-constructed in 1985, but flow was bypassed by a diversion until early-2001. In addition, the lower creek was reconstructed using old channel design criteria that utilized a guide channel and limited the amount of pooled water. The lower reclaimed Porcupine Creek was… Show more

“…Nitrogen concentrations soon decreased. High concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were associated with high selenium concentrations in See et al (1995), but the association was not as distinct with much lower selenium concentrations in 2003 (Murphree, 2003). As reported in Murphree (2003), wetland construction has significantly reduced the selenium concentrations in the reclaimed Porcupine Creek.…”

“…High concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were associated with high selenium concentrations in See et al (1995), but the association was not as distinct with much lower selenium concentrations in 2003 (Murphree, 2003). As reported in Murphree (2003), wetland construction has significantly reduced the selenium concentrations in the reclaimed Porcupine Creek. Due to the high TDS and selenium concentrations in the original AVF segment at Porcupine Creek, selected sandy overburden is now used at NARM for alluvial replacement and postmining water quality in newer replacement units is similar to premining water quality in the overburden.…”

“…Both of these wells are completed in shallow reclaimed alluvial areas. Murphree (2003) and Murphree (2007, in press) discussed the fluctuations of these wells in detail. He noted the effects of wetting and drying cycles and oxidizing and reducing conditions on the changes in concentration.…”
