Recent Findings on the Effects of Pharmacological Agents on the Nerve Regeneration after Peripheral Nerve Injury

Abstract: : Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) are accompanied with neuropathic pain and functional disability. Despite improvements in surgical repair techniques in recent years, the functional recovery is yet unsatisfied. Indeed a successful nerve repair depends not only on the surgical strategy, but also on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in traumatic nerve injury. In contrast to all strategies suggested for nerve repair, pharmacotherapy is a cheap, accessible and non-invasive treatment that can be used … Show more

“…A number of possible adjuvant therapies putatively targeting these factors have been observed to be efficacious in the laboratory setting but evidence for improvement in humans is lacking. Examples include atorvastatin and L-carnitine ( 67 ). Both have been shown to have neuroprotective effects in CNS injury and degenerative models in rat models.…”

“…Велика кількість досліджень на сьогодні проводиться щодо застосування можливих фармакологічних [15,16,17] та фізіотерапевтичних агентів [18], які можуть сприяти покращенню регенерації нерва. Окрім того, значна кількість авторів вбачає подальший розвиток хірургії периферійних нервів саме в досягненнях регенеративної медицини [19,20] та їхній комбінації з класичними хірургічними методиками [3].…”

“…Despite the increasing development of current microsurgical repair techniques, incomplete neurological recovery with sequelae often occurs [43]. The combined use of nerve regeneration drugs and microsurgery to treat peripheral nerve injury is one of the ideal treatment methods, but the neurotrophic drugs currently used are often unsatisfactory [44]. Finding an ideal drug to treat nerve injury is the current research direction.…”
