Recent Introduction and Rapid Dissemination of Chikungunya Virus and Dengue Virus Serotype 2 Associated With Human and Mosquito Coinfections in Gabon, Central Africa

Abstract: These findings show the rapid dissemination of CHIKV and DENV-2 within a nonimmune population in a tropical African country, probably facilitated by the spread of Aedes albopictus. This has resulted in major simultaneous outbreaks with numerous coinfections in both human and mosquito.

“…In one study by Caron et al, it was found that coinfection with Dengue and Chikungunya reduces the overall viral load in the affected patients. 7 More evidence-based research is required, however, to explain absence of thrombocytopenia in our patient. Since the effects of each of the viruses at the cellular level can be either complementary, additive and/or opposite, their presentation can be varied and unpredictable.…”

“…Interestingly, DENV is still circulating in the Caribbean, together with CHIKV. Cases of DENV-CHIKV coinfection in patients were first reported in 1967 (54), and since the emergence of CHIKV, reports of coinfections have been increasing (10,(55)(56)(57)(58)(59)(60)(61)(62)(63). Both viruses are transmitted by the same mosquito vectors, A. aegypti and A. albopictus.…”

“…Some studies using serological assays or PCR tests have reported that co-infection of DENV and CHIKV is not uncommon [10][11][12][13]19]. In a study performed in India in 2010, Taraphdar et al [10] found that 68 (12.4%) of 550 blood samples of febrile cases had IgM antibodies against both DENV and CHIKV.…”

“…In areas where both viruses co-circulate, both can be transmitted to the same human host and pose a challenge for medical diagnosis. DENV and CHIKV co-infection has been reported in several studies in a non-negligible proportion of cases [10][11][12]. However, fatalities in patients with DENV and CHIKV co-infection have been rare to date.…”
