Recent ozone trends in the Chinese free troposphere: role of the local emission reductions and meteorology

Abstract: Abstract. Free tropospheric ozone (O3) trends in the Central East China (CEC) and export regions are investigated for 2008–2017 using the IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) O3 observations and the LMDZ-OR-INCA model simulations, including the most recent Chinese emission inventory. The observed and modelled trends in the CEC region are −0.07 ± 0.02 and −0.08 ± 0.02 DU yr−1, respectively, for the lower free troposphere (3–6 km column) and −0.05 ± 0.02 and −0.06 ± 0.02 DU yr−1, respectively, for… Show more

“…This cycle is then used to deseasonalize the monthly mean time series by calculating the anomalies. The linear trend is then calculated based on the monthly anomalies and a linear regression, as in Dufour et al [44]. It is presented in percent per year in the following.…”

“…A long-term vertical ozone observational dataset was provided during 2001-2019 by ozonesonde measurements at the Beijing Nanjiao Meteorological Observatory (116.47 • E, 39.81 • N), which is located in the North China Plain, one of the most ozone-polluted regions in China [28,29]. This ozonesonde dataset is also a unique, available, in situ ozone measurement dataset that reveals the long-term variations in tropospheric and stratospheric ozone on the North China Plain, particularly around the Beijing region [30].…”

“…Shen et al [27] assessed Ozone Monitoring Instrument measurements to observe 2005-2017 boundary layer ozone trends in China. Dufour et al [28] investigated ozone trends in the Central East China using the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer for O 3 observations and reported a decrease in ozone in the lower free troposphere (3-6 km column) for 2008-2017. Hence, there is still uncertainty and debate about the current trends in tropospheric ozone in China.…”
