Recent Progress in Nanomaterials for Adsorptive Removal of Organic Contaminants from Wastewater

Abstract: Water being most vital component of life is getting contaminated due to inhuman disposal of toxicants in water bodies. Organic compounds such as dyes, pharmaceuticals/drugs, pesticides etc. are used for various purposes and become life threatening when dumped in water bodies without pre‐treatment. Removal of these toxicants from environment is complicated but highly essential for sustainable development. Various methods have been used for this purpose among which adsorption is the most simple, fast, effective … Show more

“…Besides pH, other condition parameters such as contact time, the concentration of the contaminant and operating temperature also play a critical role on adsorption capacity. 48 Generally, ideal materials for the adsorption of contaminants should meet several requirements: (1) be inexpensive, (2) have good mechanical and structural integrity to withstand water ow over a long period, (3) show high adsorption capacity with a high rate, (4) have a large specic surface area and (5) possess regeneration aptitude using cost-effective approaches. 3 Examples of the most commonly used materials as potential adsorbents are shown in Table 2 in accordance with their class.…”

“…These can be of industrial, civilizational or natural origin. Materials chemistry has already developed systems based on functionalized silica nanoparticles for removing heavy metals, pesticides, dyes or other organic pollutants . Hormones are a special type of organic pollutant as most of them are part of the endocrine disrupting chemicals, meaning that even the smallest quantities are sufficient to have an influence on the human body.…”

“…Nowadays, a variety of dyes are being extensively exploited in many industrial fields and it is broadcasted that more than 7 × 10 5 tonnes of commercial dyes were produced annually to fulfill the manufacturing requirements [ 1 ]. They have been used in plastic, cosmetic, pulp and paper industries, tannery, and mostly textile industries where, for instance, around 100,000 different kinds of dyes have been utilized [ 2 ].…”
