Recent Progress in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering for the Detection of Chemical Contaminants in Water

Abstract: Water is a matter of vital importance for all developed countries due to the strong impact on human health and aquatic, wetlands and terrestrial environments. Therefore, the monitoring of water quality is of tremendous importance. The enormous advantages that Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy offers, such as fingerprint recognition, multiplex capabilities, high sensitivity, and selectivity or non-destructive testing, make this analytical tool very attractive for this purpose. “…For simple, sensitive, cheap, rapid, and onsite detection capability, SERS is the future technology of interest for pesticide and antibiotics analysis [111][112][113]. Furthermore, with the development of a mass spectral library and semiconductor-metal hybrid substrates, SERS would become a robust technology for analyzing the external and penetrated pesticides of complex matrices [114].…”

“…With strong electromagnetic fields and surface chemistry enhancements, SERS can increase the original Raman signal to 10 6 orders or more [ 62 ]. Recently, the SERS sensors have been utilized for the analysis of a variety of substances including DNA, protein, metal ions, and pesticides [ 63 65 ].…”
