Recent Trends in Economic Burden of Acute Myocardial Infarction in South Korea

Abstract: In 2010, ischemic heart disease was the leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) worldwide. More specially, the prevalence of acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) is increasing in the aged population as mortality decreases; South Korea is no exception. This study aims to examine the economic burden of AMI in the Korean population between 2007 and 2012. AMI-related costs were assessed from a societal perspective. A prevalence-based cost-of-illness framework was used for this analysis. The subjects … Show more

“…Those aged < 50 years accounted for 15.3% of the AMI cases. This observation is significant because this signals a possible loss of many years of productive life [ 39 ] in addition to the social [ 40 ], psychological [ 41 ] and physical trauma the patients and their close relatives and dependents experience [ 42 ], as well as the economic burden imposed [ 43 ].…”

“…The annual insurance-covered medical cost of osteoporotic fracture in our study ($722 million in 2011) was higher than the direct medical costs for acute myocardial infarction ($607 million in 2012). [ 26 ] On the basis of these results, the relative scale of osteoporotic fracture costs can be predicted, which highlights the need for prevention and management strategies for osteoporotic fractures. By comparing the estimated economic burden of multiple diseases, government officials can make informed decisions about the allocation of resources to service provision, prevention strategies, and research funding.…”

“…The prevalence of MI is increasing with the aging global population, leading to serious disease burdens [2, 3]. Reperfusion therapy, such as immediately percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), has been used frequently in clinical practice and has been remarkably successful in increasing the rate of revascularization and reducing the mortality of MI patients [4].…”
