Recent Trends in Research on the Genetic Diversity of Plants: Implications for Conservation

Abstract: Genetic diversity and its distribution, both within and between populations, may be determined by micro-evolutionary processes, such as the demographic history of populations, natural selection, and gene flow. In plants, indices of genetic diversity (e.g., k, h and π) and structure (e.g., FST) are typically inferred from sequences of chloroplast markers. Given the recent advances and popularization of molecular techniques for research in population genetics, phylogenetics, phylogeography, and ecology, we adopt… Show more

“…Estimates of the degree of genetic variation (diversity) among plant populations have been obtained using isozyme markers (Cole, 2003), chloroplast DNA markers (Carvalho et al, 2019), nuclear DNA-based markers (Govindaraj et al, 2015;Bhandari et al, 2017), and single nucleotide polymorphisms (Pucholt et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2017). In hemp, previous studies on genetic diversity assessment have utilized RAPD markers (Faeti et al, 1996;Forapani et al, 2001;Mandolino and Ranalli, 2002).…”

“…genome size) and phytochemical diversity are very scarce [ 36 , 37 ]. The relationship between phytochemical and genetic diversity has been assessed using nuclear but especially plastid DNA markers [ 38 ], particularly in medicinal [ 39 ] and cultivated [ 40 ] plant species.…”

“…It occurs due to the environmental factors or the existence of genotypic interactions with the environment (Bhandari et al 2017). In addition, S. quadrifida used in the study had varied ages which led to genetic diversity in that population (Carvalho et al 2019). However, the tendency of such clustering is also shown in the results of research on plants that do cross-breeding (Louwaars 2018).…”
