Abstract: For many years, researchers in a range of fields have combined quantitative and qualitative methods. However, the combined use of quantitative and qualitative methods has only recently been conceptualized and defined as mixed methods research. Some authors have described the emerging field as a third methodological tradition (in addition to the qualitative and quantitative traditions). Mixed methods research combines different perspectives and facilitates the study of complex interventions or programs, particu… Show more

“…The present study is designed as a mixed-method study using a sequential nested design QUAN (QUAL+QUAL) [28, 29]. The sequential design is based on a three-phase data collection process (see Table 1 for details), where qualitative data on medical staff will be collected before patient inclusion, followed by patient quantitative data collection lasting one year and a final qualitative data collection on a sample of patients one year after inclusion.…”

“…The combination of a qualitative and a quantitative approach in succession offers the opportunity to answer both the question of exploration and that of confirmation of hypothesis. A Mixed Methods approach is useful when it comes to answering complex research questions, such as the impact of alcohol marketing on drinkers with an AUD who are seeking treatment [35]. Qualitative methods enable investigators to acquire an in-depth understanding of issues, particularly as previous research did not allow us to identify the influence of marketing and which types of marketing tools were those most identified by drinkers.…”
