Recommendations for reporting tumor budding in colorectal cancer based on the International Tumor Budding Consensus Conference (ITBCC) 2016

Abstract: Tumor budding is a well-established independent prognostic factor in colorectal cancer but a standardized method for its assessment has been lacking. The primary aim of the International Tumor Budding Consensus Conference (ITBCC) was to reach agreement on an international, evidence-based standardized scoring system for tumor budding in colorectal cancer. The ITBCC included 9 sessions with presentations, a pre-meeting survey, and an e-book covering the key publications on tumor budding in colorectal cancer. “…Tumour budding is considered to be a good marker for progression and prognosis and has potential clinical implications in colorectal carcinomas . The International Tumour Budding Consensus Conference (ITBCC) recommended including tumour budding into future colorectal cancer guidelines . The obstacle of different assessment criteria has been overcome, but the significance of reliability in daily practice has to be clarified further .…”

“…By counting multiple fields, this method has the advantage of assessing the heterogeneity observed in tumor budding and there is evidence of a high interobserver correlation. However, in 2016, the International Tumour Budding Consensus Conference recommended the use of the “hotspot method” for tumor budding assessment [27]. In this method, tumor bud counts are performed in a single HPF with the highest density of tumor buds.…”
