Recommended maximum contents of persistent organic pollutants in sewage sludge for application on agricultural soils

Abstract: The recommended maximum contents of the substances from the group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in sludge for the application on agricultural soils were proposed. The list of the substances follows Czech legislative norms for soil protection (Directive of the Ministry of Environment No. 13/1994 Sb.). The list includes the groups of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs), the amount of six congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB 6 ), DDT and residues, poly… Show more

“…However, application of wastewater in agriculture may pose potential risks to the environment, as wastewater treatment plants have a limited capacity to remove organic chemicals (Bueno et al 2012). Moreover, the application of sludge or fertilisers on agricultural soils represents another source of organic contamination in soils (Vácha et al 2005(Vácha et al , 2006.…”

“…In Europe, when sewage sludge is used in agriculture, the limits on the content of PAHs in naturally used municipal sewage sludge have been proposed [WD, 2000;WD, 2010]. Some of the EU countries have introduced internal limitation of PAHs contents in sewage sludge intended for use in agriculture [Aparicio et al 2009;Gomez et al 2002;Kapanen 2013;Langenkamp et al 2001;Vacha et al 2006]. In Germany, there are no binding regulations concerning the PAHs content in sludge, however, a designation of 9 PAH is recommended; the sum of which should not exceed 6000 μg/kg d.m.…”

“…Otros estudios realizados en campo sólo realizan la experiencia en un año, como Vácha et al (2006), que estudió la influencia de suelos tratados con 5 t/ha de bioresiduos en concentraciones de PCBs entre 57 y 1090 ng/g durante un año, determinando la ausencia de contaminación, tanto en suelos como en cultivos.…”
