Reconsidering Reparations

Abstract: Christopher Columbus’s voyage changed the world forever because the era of racial slavery and colonialism that it started built the world in the first place. The irreversible environmental damage of history’s first planet-sized political and economic system is responsible for our present climate crisis. Reparations call for us to make the world over again: this time, justly. The project of reparations and racial justice in the twenty-first century must take climate justice head on. The book develops arguments … Show more

“…JD: A huge body of climate change literature dates back at least as far as the pioneering work of Eunice Newton Foote, 31 and a succession of scientists have developed our understanding and warned us clearly of the risks associated with climate and ecological breakdown. While this list is by no means exhaustive, some great resources include (1) reports, 25,28,32–34 ; (2) documentaries 35–37 ; (3) podcasts 38,39 ; (4) books 40–51 and even thought‐provoking fictional works 52 . A range of excellent courses and training opportunities are also available, personally I have benefited from: Climate Reality Leadership, (www.climaterealityproject.org/training), Planetary Boundaries (www.edx.org) and Zero Carbon Britain (https://cat.org.uk) training.…”

“…That is, who has been harmed, what those who have been harmed need, and establish who is responsible to meet those needs (72,73). NbS that also build epistemic justice can also contribute to building restorative justice by providing guidance on how to create substantive means necessary for people to have prosperous lives by, for instance, giving land back to those who have been displaced from their homes or to establish grievances mechanisms for those who need them (16,74). Without including ILK in the design of NbS in ways that intend to redress harms, these solutions risk not being durable due to being perceived as illegitimate.…”

“…For instance, Perry (2021) argues extensions of climate finance to policy ‘targets’ extend the plantation model anew and argues for reparations in recognition of the particular harms of climate change and historical conditions of Black slavery. Intersectional ethics that address colonial, structural inequalities have significant potential to engage with philosophers like Táíwò (2022), who argues that reparations must address historical harms but that they – like climate change – are also future facing because they are about building a more just social order.…”
