Reconstruction of a large calvarial traumatic defect using a custom-made porous hydroxyapatite implant covered by a free latissimus dorsi muscle flap in an 11-year-old patient

Abstract: Reconstruction of complex skull defects requires collaboration between neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons to choose the most appropriate procedure, especially in growing children. The authors describe herein the reconstruction of an extensive traumatic bone and soft tissue defect of the cranial vault in an 11-year-old boy. The size of the defect, quality of the tissues, and patient's initial condition required a 2-stage approach. Ten months after an initial emergency procedure in which lacerated bone a… Show more

“…Despite previous studies reporting successful integration of alloplastic materials with free flap coverage of composite cranial defects, PCL could be a better option for an alloplastic material in combination with a free flap due to its easy availability, cost efficacy, and suitability for modification. [7][8][9] In our case, application of PCL to free LD flap was convenient and effective for following reasons. First, PCL implant is well anchored to surrounding bone stump which prevented malposition of the implant.…”

“…At this stage, segmentation algorithms in the field of computer vision have many applications in the segmentation of image features, but they have not formed a sign of evaluating the quality of the algorithm. Machine learning based on computer intelligence is easier to recognize and analyze data [ 12 , 13 ]. Intelligent segmentation of MRI image boundaries and features uses functional parameters to extract feature contours, and the image data obtained through image segmentation is more scientific, providing effective reference value for disease prediction [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Многие исследователи отмечают повышенную эффективность имплантатов, обладающих остеокондуктивными и остеоиндуктивными свойствами. В данном направлении ведутся активные разработки как в России, так и за рубежом [18,19,20,21]. Очевидно, что для специалистов наибольший интерес представляют отдаленные результаты доклинических и клинических испытаний таких изделий.…”
