Recovery after day‐case anaesthesia. A 24‐hour comparison of recovery after thiopentone or propofol anaesthesia

Abstract: SummarySixty patients who presented for day-case dilatation and curettage were allocated randomly to receive either thiopentone or propofol for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia. One anaesthetist administered all the anaesthetics whilst all assessments were made by one other. The results indicate that early recovery of memory function, critical flicker fusion frequency and subjective feelings of tiredness, drowsiness and alertness were superior in the propofol group. There was a significant difference i… Show more

“…However, Raeder et al [17] found no differences in incidence rates of PONV between their propofol, thiopentone, and metohexitone groups. In another clinical study comparing the effects of propofol and thiopentone, Heath et al [36] found that the women who received propofol as an anesthetic were less tired and drowsy, more alert, and recovered faster regardless of the treatment administered to prevent PONV.…”

“…Among induction agents, propofol is often used to facilitate LMA insertion because it depresses airway reflexes effectively 1 and makes early recovery possible. 2 A propofol dose ranging from 2.5 to 3 mgÁkg…”

“…Kubitz and colleagues demonstrated recovery of psychomotor functions within 24 h in patients older than 80 yr scheduled for cataract surgery [2]. In contrast, Heath and colleagues demonstrated reduced memory performance in female patients, 24 h after day case dilatation and curettage [4]. Tzabar and colleagues reported a greater number of cognitive lapses in younger patients when the patients used a cognitive failures questionnaire, which allows self-assessment.…”
