Recreational nitrous oxide abuse causing B12 deficiency with subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord: A case report

Abstract: The recreational use of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is a growing public health concern. Increasing numbers of young individuals are presenting to accident emergency departments complaining of adverse neurological symptoms as a result of N 2 O induced vitamin B12 deficiency. Despite its increasing popularity, many are still not aware of its devastating potential to cause a myriad of severe longstanding neurological impairment. Herein we present a case that highlights the … Show more

“…Moreover, severe complications such as thrombotic sequelae usually occur, associated with neurological, hematological, and psychiatric signs and symptoms of chronic N 2 O abuse [1,2,4,5,12,13,20,28,29]. On the other hand, the prompt discontinuation of N 2 O and the supplementation of vitamin B12 rapidly improve the clinical features of the patients, potentially leading to the extensive resolution of signs and symptoms in the large majority of reported cases [1][2][3]14,[30][31][32][33].…”

“…Moroccans) was also recently reported (Nabben et al, 2021). Excessive N 2 O use may lead to vitamin B 12 deficiency (Lan et al, 2019; Razaq and Qureshi, 2020; Winstock and Ferris, 2020), which can cause neurological damage with sometimes irreversible sequelae if diagnosis and treatment are delayed (Bethmont et al, 2019; Garakani et al, 2016; Nutt et al, 2020; Oussalah et al, 2019; Xiang et al, 2021; Zheng et al, 2020). More specifically, the spinal cord is an important injury site associated with problematic N 2 O use, and – considering the growing number of published case reports – paraplegia following frequent N 2 O use is no longer uncommon.…”
