Recurrent presumed herpes simplex keratitis and episcleritis in keratosis follicularis (Darier's disease)

Abstract: Keratosis follicularis (Darier's disease) is an autosomal dominant dermatological disorder characterised by abnormal epidermal differentiation and loss of normal cell-to-cell adhesion. Cardinal features include diffuse hyperkeratotic warty papules with scaly plaques in seborrhoeic regions with associated mucous membrane changes. Darier's disease is rare (prevalence 2.7 in 100 000), with few ocular sequelae reported: commonly dry eye with or without Sjögren's syndrome. This is the first report, to the best of o… Show more

“…Additionally, a number of ocular features have been previously described in DD patients [30, 31, 32, 33]. We report a case of herpes virus simplex (HSV) infection in the cornea of the left eye of patient I.2 and alert for the relationship between possible impaired adhesion molecules in the corneal epithelium and the increased risk of HSV infection.…”

“…Objawy oczne występują rzadko i obejmują punktowe uszkodzenia nabłonka rogówki przebiegające ze światłowstrętem, owrzodzenia rogówki, rogowacenie spojówki, a także zwiększoną skłonność do nawracających opryszczkowatych zapaleń rogówki. Opisano pojedyncze przypadki wystąpienia zaćmy i odwarstwienia siatkówki [10,11].…”

“…They can present as punctuate corneal epithelial defects (photophobia), asymptomatic opacities in periphery of cornea,[ 4 5 ] bilateral corneal subepithelial infiltrations, corneal ulcerations, or conjunctival keratosis. [ 1 ] Patients with Darier's are also prone to recurrent herpes keratitis[ 6 ] and episcleritis. There have been rare reports of other abnormalities including cataract, basal cell carcinoma,[ 7 ] retinal detachment, and in some patients, typical retinitis pigmentosa[ 8 ] and even horn-like growths[ 9 ] along the lid margin.…”
