Recurrent tectonic activity in northeastern Brazil during Pangea breakup: Constraints from U-Pb carbonate dating

Abstract: Carbonate U-Pb dating of samples from rift-bounding faults of intracontinental basins in the Borborema province, northeastern Brazil, indicate recurrent tectonic activity during Pangea breakup lasting for >150 m.y. from the Late Triassic to the Paleocene, reactivating inherited strike-slip Neoproterozoic–Cambrian shear zones. Triassic ages indicate that brittle deformation started some 80 m.y. before previously known, most likely related to rifting along the incipient Central Atlantic. The subsequent Cr… Show more

“…Thereby, the pure carbonate cement meets the size requirements of over 150 μm (Lan et al, 2023). In addition, sandstone samples with low uranium content also ensure the absence of pollution effects from later redox uranium mineralization processes (Ganade et al, 2022). Eventually, clean carbonate sites without inclusion and pyrite were selected for testing as far as possible (Shen et al, 2021).…”

“…Compared with previous methods, the newly established method exhibits numerous advantages, including high precision, high spatial resolution, high efficiency, convenient sample preparation, low consumption and low test background (Jin et al, 2021; Wu et al, 2022). Consequently, it is widely employed in various geological fields to determine the formation age of carbonate minerals, study diagenetic process, investigate fault and hydrothermal activities and explore the evolution of oil–gas reservoirs (Amidon et al, 2022; Ganade et al, 2022; Lan et al, 2023; Rembe et al, 2022). In this study, we focus on the red‐variegated Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation of the Dalin uranium deposit in the Qianjiadian area of the Songliao basin.…”

“…These anomalies are post-Cretaceous, as the Barreiras Formation itself is post-Cretaceous between 15 and 20 Ma [ 61 ]. Consequently, any anomaly detected within this formation, such as knickpoints, abrupt inflections, drainage network asymmetries, and all verified morphometric indices, along with knickpoints, are strong evidence of post-Barreiras tectonics, and thus, post-Cretaceous [ 62 ]. According to Brito Neves et al (2009) [ 48 ], this graben system has a general NNE-SSW direction and houses river valleys nested in transcurrent and normal faults commonly filled with Quaternary alluvial sedimentation, many of them forming extensive mangroves.…”
