Red-Absorbing Cationic Acceptor Dyes for Photocathodes in Tandem Solar Cells

Abstract: A pair of new donor−π−acceptor dyes that absorb toward the red region of the visible spectrum (CAD 1 and CAD 2) utilizing indolium cationic acceptor units have been synthesized for use in p-type dye-sensitized solar cells (p-DSC). Their optical and electrochemical properties were determined experimentally, including application of ultrafast transient absorption and time-resolved infrared spectroscopies. Our results are supported by computational modeling. NiO-based p-DSCs with CAD 1 and CAD 2 gave short-circui… Show more

“…Figure also shows that the magnitude of the dark current at a given potential increases across the series. The charge lifetime ( τ h ) and charge density ( Q OC ) in NiO were determined by using small square wave modulated photovoltage experiments and charge‐extraction experiments . Figure shows τ h versus Q OC and Table summarizes τ h for the IOD series at a similar V OC .…”

“…The other errors mentioned above ((1), (2), and (5)) can also be characterized in TRMPS measurements, as they reveal themselves through repeating noise patterns in the multiple-probe measurements. Each pump-probe measurement includes uncertainty due to variation in the sample and pump laser conditions.…”

“…The most successful of these has been Warnan et al who realised a 25% IPCE (λ = 620 nm) with a triad (SQ-PMI-NDI) [87]. Wood et al obtained similar results (3.3 mA/cm 2 and 18% IPCE at 625 nm) [88] using an asymmetric TPA based sensitizer. These researchers followed this work up with P1 derivatives containing bodipy acceptor moieties [98].…”

“…With high quantum efficiencies attained for blue-green absorbing dyes, and general design rules for pDSCs being better understood, it seems reasonable that this should be a high priority area of pDSC development. So far a handful of groups [75,87,88,94,110,137] have produced dyes for pDSCs with substantially red-shifted absorbance. In three cases, squarine has been employed as the electron acceptor.…”
