Red Imported Fire Ant in Australia: What if we lose the war?

Abstract: Summary In Australia, a national eradication programme for the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren), one of the world's most invasive species, has been in operation since 2001 when the pest was first detected in Brisbane, Queensland. Since that time, four separate incursions of this ant have been successfully eradicated from this country, but the main Brisbane population remains. Cost‐benefit analyses already conducted put the likely impact of Red Imported Fire Ant in Australia, if not eradicated, … Show more

“…The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is a significant pest that has been introduced into many areas around the world, including North America, Australia, China, and Asian-Pacific regions (Morrison et al, 2004; Zeng et al, 2005; Ascunce et al, 2011; Wetterer, 2013; Wylie & Janssen-May, 2017). The invasion of Solenopsis invicta has represented a major threat to native arthropods and small vertebrates in many ecological communities (Holway et al, 2002; Orrock & Danielson, 2004; Thawley & Langkilde, 2016; Darracq et al, 2017).…”

“…Red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is one of the most harmful invasive species and poses serious hazards to agriculture, natural environments, and public health (Wylie and Janssen-May 2016). In Japan, S. invicta was first discovered in a shipping container from China in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, in May 2017, and the invasion into Japan via this trade pathway is continuing (Ministry of Environment Japan 2020).…”
