Abstract: The discovery of crown ether host-guest systems initiated the multidisciplinary field of supramolecular chemistry. Whereas cyclic crown ethers selectively bind metal cations in their center, the lesser known inverse crowns are rings of metal cations that efficiently bind anionic entities.
