“…A comparison of the EIQ field rating values with those calculated in other apple production districts would be difficult and misleading because of differences in climatic conditions, insect and disease pest species (representing different levels of potential damage), and availability of registered pesticides. Nevertheless, it was noted that in a recent 4-year survey carried out in Eastern US apple orchards, the average EIQ field rating due to insecticide and acaricide treatments (mineral oil excluded) varied from 25.7 to 38.9 in those using reduced risk strategies, and between 197 and 237 in conventionally managed blocks (Agnello et al 2009). In the present study, the comparable EIQ value for insecticide and acaricide treatments was 53.7, which is very close to that calculated for the reduced risk strategies in the United States.…”

“…The newEIQ decreases the relative weight of mineral oil in the EIQ field rating from 50-56% to 37%; this permits a response to a second criticism of the original EIQ (Agnello et al 2009). Such an effect is also anticipated for other pesticides that are not classified as hazardous materials, and mitigates the high environmental impact attributed to organic production methods by the EIQ (Chouinard et al 2007;Sauphanor et al 2010).…”
