Aims: To describe the level of work engagement of active health care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its relationship with psychological distress according to the professional category. Background: Health care professionals working on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic are at risk of psychological distress, and work engagement could be a positive attitude that could serve as a protective factor. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study of 1,459 health care professionals. Psychological distress was measured with the General Health Questionnaire and work engagement with the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Data were analysed with bivariate analyses and correlations.Results: Psychological distress was reported by 80.6% of health care professionals. Work engagement as high with a total mean score of 5.04 (SD = 1.14). The results showed that distressed professionals showed significantly lower levels of work engagement. Conclusions:The present study identified psychological distress and work engagement experienced by health care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the variables included in the study revealed a significant relationship with psychological distress and work engagement. Implications for Nursing Management:The relationship between the working conditions with psychological distress and work engagement suggests that improvements in the workplace are needed to promote protective measure for the mental health of health care professionals.

Health and human service providers who aid traumatized individuals frequently experience vicarious trauma (VT). Although VT plays a critical role in service providers’ mental health and well-being, as well as in the quality of their service provision, little information is available concerning the development and implementation of VT interventions for service providers. To advance the development of evidence in this area, we undertook a scoping review in which we reviewed existing interventions intended to address VT among service providers working with traumatized clients. Searches of electronic databases were conducted to identify studies published in peer-reviewed journals, with no date restrictions. Over 1,315 citations were reviewed, and a total of 27 studies were included in the final review. The findings show that VT interventions in the literature can be divided broadly into four categories: psychoeducation, mindfulness intervention, art and recreational programs, and alternative medicine therapy. The VT interventions reviewed generally showed promise in their key outcomes, including reductions in secondary trauma stress, compassion fatigue, burnout, and other mental health outcomes. However, the current body of research is lacking both in rigor and in specificity regarding the definition of VT. Furthermore, existing VT interventions are generally self-care based and tend to focus on general stress management rather than addressing the specific effects of VT. Therefore, we call for an increase in efforts to tailor VT interventions to different service settings and participant characteristics, as well as greater attention to developing primary VT interventions at the organizational level.

Objetivo: Avaliar a efetividade da acupuntura auricular na redução dos níveis de ansiedade em estudantes universitários, quando comparada com o placebo. Métodos: Foram randomizados 40 voluntários em dois grupos: Auriculoterapia com sementes seguindo o protocolo para Ansiedade (G1) e Placebo (G2). Os grupos foram acompanhados durante seis semanas, com aplicações semanais da auriculoacupuntura, e responderam o Inventário de Ansiedade Traço (IDATE-T) ao iniciarem a primeira sessão e o Inventário de Ansiedade Estado (IDATE-E) na primeira e última sessões. Resultados: Os participantes do G1 obtiveram escore médio do IDATE-T de 46,45 pontos, enquanto o IDATE-E inicial e o final foram, respectivamente, 45,76 e 37,05. O G2 obteve os valores de 49,3 para o IDATE-T, 44,3 e 43,3 para o IDATE-E inicial e final. O teste dos pontos com sinais de Wilcoxon demonstrou significância estatística para a redução dos escores de ansiedade no G1, o que não foi observado no G2. Conclusão: O estudo quantificou os escores de ansiedade na população estudantil universitária e a possibilidade de reduzi-los a partir da proposta terapêutica da auriculoacupuntura. Foi observada redução nos escores de ansiedade nos participantes dos grupos estudados, entretanto, quando comparados os resultados, apenas houve significância estatística no grupo com protocolo para ansiedade.
