Reducing Carbon Emissions from the Tourist Accommodation Sector on Non-Interconnected Islands: A Case Study of a Medium-Sized Hotel in Rhodes, Greece

Abstract: Reducing the carbon emissions from hotels on non-interconnected islands (NII) is essential in the context of a low carbon future for the Mediterranean region. Maritime tourism is the major source of income for Greece and many other countries in the region, as well as hot-temperate and tropical regions worldwide. “…With the increasing global environmental crisis, society and academia have paid great attention to carbon emissions. Some scholars have evaluated the carbon emissions of scenic spots [ 18 ], tourist transportation [ 19 , 20 ], and tourist accommodation [ 19 , 21 , 22 ]. Because hotels are open 24 h a day, with a wide variety of functions and facilities and the different living habits of residents, they are considered to be the main source of carbon emissions after tourist traffic [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…The researcher's interest in the governance and institution of marine tourism is based on the reason that the development of marine tourism is one of the government's ways to boost the economy and promote equal development. The high enthusiasm of visitors to travel to the beach has made the tourism sector rapidly grow in many countries [1] [2]. This is because the beach offers various natural beauties and interesting activities, such as swimming, surfing, or simply relaxing on the beach [3].…”
