Reducing Power Consumption in Wavelength Routed Networks by Selective Switch Off of Optical Links

Abstract: In this paper, the power consumption of a transparent circuit-switched wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical network is evaluated, considering client flow protection requirements and the daily traffic variability. Moreover, a simple heuristic algorithm is applied to the considered network scenario to reduce the power consumption of optical links. When traffic load decreases, the algorithm tries to switch off optical links according to several heuristic criteria that take into account the power consump… Show more

“…The power model aims to calculate the power consumed considering the power of transmission Ptx. It is obviously clear that this assumption is valid due to the strong dependence of the power consumed at macro sites and the traffic load [19]. The value of the parameter L represents the activity level of the BS that allows describing the portion of resources allocated for transmission task, where the no activity of user in current cell is expressed by the value zero and and the resources availability of one or different users represents the full load.…”

“…For the network, total renewable energy at a node is the sum of solar and wind energy available at a node in a day.Output of 1 sq meter of silicon solar cell for a day is 0.28 kW [14].Area of silicon solar panels configured at each node is 100 sq meter. Assuming that solar plants can work 12 hours a day and wind turbines operate all day i.e.…”

“…Similarly in [13], the authors have also proposed to save energy by shutting down idle line cards and chassis, of IP over WDM when the traffic load is low and minimizing the potential traffic interruption when the line cards and chassis are shut down. The authors in [14], also propose an approach to selectively switch off optical links. The key contribution of this paper is to minimize the energy consumption of the whole IP over WDM MLR 14 node network on the basis of total renewable energy available at nodes using an MILP model.…”

“…5. In contrast to the previous three works that evaluated the power consumption at different loads, Coiro [44] considers a case study where the daily load varies according to a sinusoidal function. He uses only a PAR approach to power off the OLAs, and reports savings of 35%.…”
