Reference Intervals and Age‐related Changes for Platelet Count, Mean Platelet Volume and Plateletcrit in Healthy Pre‐weaning Piglets in Italy

Abstract: Platelet count (PLT) mean platelet volume (MPV) and plateletcrit (PCT) were determined for 117 Landrace x Large White piglets aged 3-21 days; counts were performed with an automated blood cell counter (ABX Pentra 120). Reference values were estimated following the guidelines of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) and the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH). The calculated central 95% reference limits for PLT was 49.9-516.2 x 10(9)/1, for MPV 6.71-9.91 fl and … Show more

“…Blood specimens were immediately divided into 2 portions as described in the literature. 1,6 The first portion of blood (1 mL) was transferred into plastic tubes with K 2 -EDTA (dipotassium salt of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid).…”

“…There are several reports concerning both primary (platelet) and secondary (plasma) hemostasis in pigs, based on experiments carried out on pigs of various ages and different genetic lines. 5,6,11,13,14,17,18,22,24 Most of the data refer to hematologic and plasma biochemistry parameters in pigs, and often only single parameters of hemostasis have been addressed. Moreover, the current knowledge of swine hemostasis seems to be insufficient for the broader use of a swine model for biomedical research.…”

“…However, to our knowledge, there have been few reports about the blood biochemistry for specific pathogen-free (SPF) miniature pigs, although simple hematology tests have been conducted in germ-free Minnesota miniature pigs [9,10]. In addition, normal values for blood biochemistry may be age-dependent, and only age-related changes in platelet activity have previously been reported [11,12]. …”

“…The different parameters analysed to assess the general health status of the piglets showed some differences but also high variability. Few authors attribute this nding to the immune system development during the growth of piglets [15,33]. On day 3 postnatally, females derived from the ET group showed signi cantly greater values in the concentration of RBC, Hb and HTC compared to the AI group.…”
