Reference Values for Cord Blood Lipid and Lipoprotein Concentrations

Abstract: Reference value for cord blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations. Acta Paediatr Scand, 63: 431, 1974.-Cord blood lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in 120 newborns, 60 boys and 60 girls, have been determined in order to evaluate reference values for these components. The lipoprotein analyses were performed with an electrophoretic technique, which enables correction for the difference in lipid composition of the lipoproteins in the quantitation procedure. The lipid analyses revealed a small, but statistica… Show more

“…This study confirms earlier observations in term newborn infants that alfa-lipoprotein levels represent about 50% or more of the total lipoproteins (1,6,13). The HDL concentration in term newborn infants was found to be 73.6+3.9% of the adult value (S.E.)…”

“…Only 0.5% of the samples had both elevated cholesterol and TG. These cholesterol and TG distributions are similar to those previously reported (5,7,10,(28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34).…”

“…Cord blood lipoprotein levels have not been studied extensively but their characterization is obviously important. In the Bogalusa newborns, the mean values of P-, pre-p, and a-lipoprotein-cholesterol were 30 mg/dl, 4 mg/dl, and 36 mg/dl, respectively, which compare closely with other reported values (10,(12)(13)(14)21). Our observation that the average level of total cholesterol at birth is higher in whites than in blacks is opposite that reported in school-aged children (I 1, 22).…”
