Reference values of urinary chromium in Italy

Abstract: From our investigation the reference values for U-Cr were lower than those obtained in previous investigations. In addition it confirms a further reduction in U-Cr levels following the previous decline reported in the 1970s and 1980s. In over 20 years U-Cr values in the general population dropped from values greater than 1 microgram/l to values between 0.5 and 0.2 microgram/l. The reasons of this progressive decline cannot be attributed in our opinion to a reduced intake of the metal, but mainly to the improve… Show more

“…0.76 mg l 21 vs. 0.65 and 0.24 mg l 21 , respectively. However, it is worth mentioning that the data published by Apostoli et al 19 were estimated by giving to all the undetectable samples theoretical values equal to 0.56LOD, i.e., 0.025 mg l 21 . Although this approach allows more complete information on the lowest ®ndings to be obtained, it results in ranges lower than those achieved excluding all samples below the LOD, as in the present study.…”

“…Each urine sample was tested for Cr and creatinine concentration. The U-Cr was assessed by an electrothermic atomization-atomic absorption spectrometry (ETA-AAS) method with a detection limit of 0.05 mg/L [Apostoli and Maranelli, 1997].…”
