Reference Values of Various Blood Constituents in Young Minipigs

Abstract: In the Göttinger minipig, the reference values of 18 parameters in whole blood or plasma were determined. The results are expressed both äs the mean value and ± 2 SD presuming a symmetrical normal distribution and äs the median value with the corresponding ränge. For jpost blood constituents, the results of the two modes of calculation were similar. Comparison of the values from young minipigs with those from children shows that these animals are well suited in this respect for experimental work related tp hum… Show more

“…After an 18-h overnight fast, animals were dosed with an intravenous bolus of glucose [500 g/l (0.3 mg/kg), SAD] at t ϭ 0, and blood samples were obtained at t ϭ Ϫ15, Ϫ10, Ϫ5, 1, 3,5,7,10,45,50,55,61,63,65,67,70,80,85,91,93,95,97, and 100 min relative to the glucose load. At t ϭ 60 min, another bolus of glucose [500 g/l (0.6 g/kg), SAD] was dosed intravenously, and from t ϭ 61 to t ϭ 100 min, glucose was infused intravenously at 2 g ⅐ kg Ϫ1 ⅐ h Ϫ1 (200 g/l, SAD).…”

“…Of special interest for the study of diabetes is the similarities to humans found in the clinical chemistry (7,10,12,14,24,26,55), nutrition and gastrointestinal tract (4,8,11,20,35,40,51), pancreas development and morphology (21,36,37,44,49,54), and metabolism (3, 35). These characteristics make swine an interesting species for studies of metabolic abnormalities in diabetes.…”

“…Parson and Wells (1986) have published similar data on the Yucatan minipig. Brechbuler, Kaeslin, and Wyler (1984) and Oldigs (1986) have published on the Göttinger minipig. Middleton and coworkers have published extensive lists (organized by age and sex) on the hematological parameters (Burks et al 1977) and serum electrolytes (Hutcheson, Tumbleson, and Middleton 1979) for the Sinclair minipig.…”
