Can methods travel the way migrants do? We reflect on this question through the development of what we call ‘virtual participatory video’ or the delivery of participatory video methods for migrant domestic workers and asylum-seekers in Hong Kong – transnationally, online and over Zoom during the pandemic in 2020. The pandemic realities that we grappled with as migration studies scholars and participatory video practitioners reflect realities that working-class and precarious migrants were routinely required to navigate long before the pandemic (e.g., family separation, restriction of personal mobility, maintaining connection through technology). Therefore, we paid particular attention to the challenges and opportunities posed by virtual participatory video, particularly on resultant changes to attention, creativity, and relationality (core tenets of face-to-face participatory video) when time and space are, by necessity, fragmented. The fragmentation of time and space in virtual participatory video entailed a greater presence of migrant realities and demands into the method itself, perhaps most notably a tangible sense of competing demands that participants were expected to negotiate at any particular moment. Attentiveness to competing demands can be particularly valuable when working with members of communities that may experience varying forms of scarcity in relation to time or space, such as migrant domestic workers or asylum-seekers. Re-thinking fragmentation as part of the texture of virtual participatory video illustrated the durability of creativity when day-to-day realities are permitted to intrude on learning over Zoom.

Participatory video: A non-formal education tool for adult educators

Adult education is a wide field which is dealing with the educational needs of adult learners from a diversity of groups, including people with special needs, women, refugees and asylum seekers. The aim of this study is to understand and analyse the opinions of the educators regarding their understanding of the participatory video method, the usage, the benefits and the contribution of the participatory video method to their professional development, and finally their thoughts on the participatory video method. The qualitative study and the case study with a holistic single case were used. Face-to-face interviews using semi-structured interview forms were used to collect data. The results show that the understanding of the participatory video method by the educators was the inclusion of different groups of people, collaborating and learning new skills; the benefits gained by educators were learning new things and skills; the participatory video method has contributed to their professional development and the majority of the educators are eager to implement it in their workshops and practices; and the educators perceived the participatory video method as an inclusive, connecting, tutorial and a generally positive phenomenon. These findings will inspire adult educators to use this method in their training organised for disadvantaged groups. Keywords Adult education; participatory video method; people with special needs

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is innovatively combined with participatory video for artistic creation and communication to improve the enthusiasm of art lovers for artistic creation and communication and expand the application range of AI technology. First, the interactive framework of interactive participation video is proposed based on the analysis of the related literature of interactive non-linear video. Then, a questionnaire is designed accordingly to analyze the social needs of people on art social platforms. According to the survey results, the participatory art video online communication platform is designed and preliminarily realized. Finally, a participant video eye movement control experiment is conducted to test the performance of the participatory art video development platform. Meanwhile, the platform is evaluated through field research from two aspects of test efficiency and user experience. The results show that the operation time of the participatory art video development platform is much shorter than that of the control group. It takes only approximately 15 s to complete the annotation operation with low SD, indicating that the system performance is stable. The accuracy of the platform also reaches 100%.
