Refocusing Moving Ship Targets in SAR Images Based on Fast Minimum Entropy Phase Compensation

Abstract: Moving ship targets appear blurred and defocused in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images due to the translation motion during the coherent processing. Motion compensation is required for refocusing moving ship targets in SAR scenes. A novel refocusing method for moving ship is developed in this paper. The method is exploiting inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) technique to refocus the ship target in SAR image. Generally, most cases of refocusing are for raw echo data, not for SAR image. Taking into accou… Show more

“…Moreover, many studies have been taken on this topic [15,16,19,22,24]. Nevertheless, these methods are based on low-resolution, short-CPI simulation or airborne SAR data, and their application to high-resolution, long-CPI spaceborne SAR images requires further verification.…”

“…The nonparametric algorithms mainly include the maximum contrast (MC) [22], minimum entropy (ME) [23,24], weighted least-squares (WLS) [25], sharpness optimization [26,27], Doppler centroid tracking (DCT) [28], phase gradient autofocus (PGA) [29] and rank-one phase estimation (ROPE) [30,31] methods. Because the MC, ME, WLS and sharpness optimization methods do not make any assumptions about the characteristics of the target itself, they are highly adaptable.…”

“…The work in [17] presents a new method for refocusing moving ships in SAR images. Ship detection is widely required for both civilian and military surveillance; however, SAR images derived by standard focusing suffer from strong blurring in presence of moving ships.…”

“…These kinds of methods are used to optimize the cost function, which enables the scene to be well focused. One of the most commonly used cost functions is entropy, and such methods are often called the minimum entropy (ME) method [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. ME-based methods are not restricted by the assumptions in PGA, so there is no limitation on the bandwidth of estimation.…”
