The 'Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI), also known as 'One Belt One Road', is an unprecedented endeavour by the Chinese government to invest massively in roads, railroads and other infrastructure. This new initiative represents the government's ambition to connect China to overseas markets via establishing trade routes through Asia, Africa and Europe. Ultimately, the official aim was to facilitate trade and investment between China and the countries involved not only in BRI, fostering economic development in China, but also in its partner countries (NDRC, 2015). 1 1 Chaisse (2018) also discuss the wider strategic implications for China and the world of the BRI initiative.
