Refractive index measured by laser beam displacement at λ=1064 nm for solvents and deuterated solvents

Abstract: The refractive index of a liquid is determined with 0.0003 accuracy from measurements of laser beam displacement by a liquid-filled standard 10 mm spectrophotometer cell. The apparatus and methods are described and the results of measurements at λ=1064 nm and T=25.0 °C for 30 solvents and deuterated solvents are presented. Several sources of potential systematic errors as large as 0.003 are identified, the most important being the curvature of the liquid cell windows. The measurements are analyzed accounting f… Show more

“…The scattering angle was varied by rotating the sample cell assembly and is given by θ = 90 • + θ 0 + θ /n, where θ 0 is the deviation from the nominal 90 • scattering angle, θ is the cell rotation angle, and n is the sample refractive index at the laser wavelength. 18 Kleinman symmetry and the value R = 3 were assumed for the fits, except for nitrobenzene where the previously determined value R = 3.114 was used, 13 and perfluorobenzonitrile where R = 3.10 ± 0.02 was needed to adequately fit the present data. The ratio A 0 /A T indicates the relative strength of the octupolar β (3) HRS contribution, and is largest for CCl 4 .…”

“…For nitrobenzene at T = 25 • C with λ 0 = 1064 nm, one has n i = 1.5262, n s = 1.5589, θ 0 = 1.2 • , and K m = 2π/172 nm. [42][43][44] For ε s = 34.82 and Z + = Z − = Z = 1, the screening parameter K 2 D = K 2 m will be obtained for ρ + + ρ − = 1.09 × 10 −4 mol/L. 45 The maximum ion-induced HRS intensities, obtained from Eqs.…”
