Refractive index modulation in polymeric photochromic films

Abstract: Photochromic properties of methylacrylate monomers and polymers containing azobenzene groups with heterocyclic sulfonamide functionalities viz sul somidyne (4-amino-N-[2,6-dimethylpyrimidyn-4-yl]benzenesulfonamide) and sulfamethoxazole (4-amino-N-[5-methylisoxazol-3-yl]benzenesulfonamide) substituents were investigated. On illumination with light the azobenzene group underwent trans-cis isomerisation, which was manifested by a drop in the absorbance of the maximum absorption peak at ca. 450 nm and by decrease … Show more

“…The average thickness is around 1 μm, and its absorbance has a maximum value of 1.9 at 438 nm (for more information, see [14]). Thus, for the purpose of registering the beam statistics into the film, a diode-pumped solid-state laser emitting at 473 nm is used to maximize the absorption of the azopolymer (the absorbance is 1.6).…”

“…Isomerization of the diazo group in the bright domains creates changes of dielectric properties of the polymer and it causes modulation of refractive index which results in a formation of a diffraction grating. Authors of this paper contributed to this subject developing series of sulfonamide containing diazobenzene monomeric and polymeric materials showing good photochromic properties [13][14][15][16][17][18]. All they contained heterocyclic sulfonamide fragments and their maximum absorption band was at ca.…”

“…These were prepared by spin coating azobenzene (diluted in THF with a con-centration of 50mg/ml) on a glass substrate. The average thickness is around 1 m, and its absorbance has a maximum value of 1.9 at 438 nm-for more information see [13]. A coherent and linearly polarized light induces the formation of surface relief gratings on the azopolymer films; this phenomenon results from isomerization-induced translation in which the molecules migrate almost parallel to the polarization direction.…”
