While the history of the concept of sustainable development can be traced back to the 19th century-and, according to Du Pisani (2006), may be even much earlier-it gained public attention after the publication of the 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), better known as the Brundtland Commission (WCED, 1987). The report, titled Our common future, introduced the concept as a solution to problems caused by the technological progress and economic growth characterizing developed countries after World War II.
