-Organic farming is widely perceived as being more environmentally friendly than conventional farming. As a form of sustainable agriculture, it receives substantial support from policy for its contribution to environmental protection as well as the provision of amenities such as biodiversity and cultural landscapes. Consumers are attracted to organic foods as they are produced without synthetic chemicals and comply with higher animal welfare standards. Although organic farming certainly has the potential to fulfil these expectations, studies have shown that some certified organic farms do not. Their practices comply with the regulations, but not with the principles of organic farming. This trend has been called 'conventionalisation' of organic farming. In this paper we review the studies that discuss the conventionalisation of organic farming, focusing on the farm level and on evidence from Europe. We argue that to strengthen organic farming's transformative potential, the debate must move beyond its focus on the bifurcation between artisanal and conventionalised organic farms, so as to capture the full range of empirical heterogeneity. Our core argument is that to adequately understand the dynamics within organic farming and their potential impact on the ability of organic farming to fulfil the expectations of consumers and policy-makers, it is not sufficient to focus on structural changes. Au regard des objectifs de développement de l’agriculture biologique (AB) affichés au niveau français, l’élevage est potentiellement un contributeur important. Le modèle de polyculture-élevage est un des fondamentaux de l’AB et a fait la preuve de sa robustesse. Mais aujourd’hui, on constate une diversité d’intégrations de l’élevage dans des unités de production, et des exigences nouvelles s’imposent à l’AB en termes de performances, du fait d’évolutions réglementaires ou de la situation des marchés. Quatre thématiques de recherche sont jugées prioritaires : i) concevoir des systèmes d’élevage plus autonomes et économes en intrants, en combinant expérimentations et suivis en ferme ; ii) évaluer l’état sanitaire des troupeaux et les outils thérapeutiques alternatifs, conformément aux attendus réglemen- taires en termes de santé et de bien-être des animaux ; iii) améliorer la maîtrise des qualités nutritionnelles, sensorielles et sanitaires des produits animaux ; iv) renforcer les interactions entre élevage biologique et environnement, en privilégiant ses impacts sur la biodiversité et sur les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, ainsi que les consommations énergétiques et les transferts de fertilité dans ou entre les unités de production. Les enseignements méthodologiques de projets de recherche sont précisés dans une dernière partie, en distinguant évaluation des performances et contributions au développement de l’AB.

An Eco-Region (Biodistretto in Italian) is a rural area where different actors work together for the sustainable management of local resources, based on the principles and models of organic farming. Social, environmental, economic as well as ethical dimensions are involved. Eco-Regions are quickly growing in number in the EU and worldwide; different Eco-Regions types emerged, showing a variety of cultural, physical, socioeconomic characteristics, and related policies and regulations. The Eco-Regions represent an innovative sustainable integrated rural development approach; their success can be supported by analyzing their basic features and their development dynamics. A balance between a strictly centralized and bureaucratic Eco-Regions management and a bottom-up non-regulated Eco-Regions proliferation should be provided to grant the development of community-based resilient initiatives. To this end a monitoring tool, based on the Porter's Diamond model, involving the local actors in analyzing the Eco-Regions structure and performances, could provide useful. Previous studies defined an Eco-Region monitoring tool, where different shortcomings characterized the analytical framework definition. The goal of the present paper is therefore to define an improved monitoring tool, more consistent to the Porter's Diamond model by reviewing the cluster related literature, focusing on the Porter's approach. The integrations resulting from the literature analysis contributed to a major increase in the indicators directly related to the original Porter's approach; new food security and sovereignty, as well as specifically designed sustainability indicators have also been added. By expanding the pool of indicators, the monitoring tool is more adaptive and able to support sustainable management of Eco-Regions in different contexts.
